Play-In Rounds (2004)

The Mug accepted 50 teams, 26 more than the 24 group slots. The top 16 seeds are straight through to group play, but the 34 lower seeds must play-in. The lower a team is seeded, the more play-in rounds it must win to obtain one of the eight remaining group lots. With 49 teams, the play-in schedule looks like this:

20 teams play week one. The ten survivors play the next six highest seeds in week 3. The eight survivors play the next eight highest seeds in week 4. The eight survivors advance to group play against the top 16 seeds. A random draw will be held between each play-in round.
